Yeah, I've seen this Hind vid a couple of times before, very impressive, but they also explained it (I don't remember the explanation though).

Re: Funny Stuff!

It created an optical illusion because of the camera frame capture (its lower than the Hind's rotor speed so it looks like its rotors are stopped in midair), it's all a matter of optical illusion, the ppl that were watching saw it flying "normally", the camera is the reason of that illusion (a refresh rate similar to the heli's rotor turning speed).

"The shutter speed of the camera matches the speed of the main rotor blades. It's just like watching a running fan in the dark with a strobe light."

The Aliasing effect is the main cause, lol, I love how ppl start to talk about conspiracy theories lol! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QS1Rzv7ZhKQ

By the way, watch this excellent vid:

Note the Hind's rotor rotation pattern in the middle of the vid (and you'll comprehend why in the other vid the Hind seems to float).

Thanks 8) lol!

I bet the camera they used to record the Hind's flight was from the late 80's / early 90's because of the generally slow recording speed (on the cheap cameras back then).

Also, you should be aware of a special effect that helicopters create when the engine fails or is shot to hell, it's called Autorotation.

"In the operation of helicopters and autogyros, autorotation is the name given to the generation of lift by the main rotor even though no power is being provided to the rotor by an engine. Autogyros have an un-powered main rotor so they rely continuously on autorotation as their source of lift. Following an engine failure, a helicopter may be able to slow its descent before landing and land in a controlled manner, using autorotation."

This feature is used on almost all current combat helis, let's say a chopper is shot, the engine stops but as the helicopter start to fall the rotors automatically use the upward air flow to generate a contra-rotation effect thus slowing down the fall and possibly avoiding a violent crash of the heli.

This feature has saved many lives, there has been a lot of controversy about the Osprey because it does not haves this particular function (because of the tiltrotor feature) though it does haves some particular enhancements to compensate the lack of autorotation.

i didn't even know that but, estimately how much does the helicopter have b4 the rotors are finally too slow to provide lift? like a minute or so?

Depends (on the height, air flow, etc.) but this mechanism sure works well and proved itself from time to time.

As far as I know, the rotation starts as soon as air start to pass through the rotors, the intensity will increase as more air flow "pumps it".

Still, it's much better than dropping without any chance of survival Embarassed

yeah too true, i still think it's genius. whats next, ejection seats on helicopters? (though i don't think that could ever be possible because a parachute would not be able to deploy usually on such low altitudes)

Actually it is lol!

The Kamov Ka-50 was the first helicopter to be fitted with an ejection seat, the heli's main rotors are equipped with explosive bolts and are designed to disintegrate moments before the seat rocket is fired (to avoid slashing the pilot).

Laughing It's quite fascinating though.

"The Russian Zvezda K-37 seat system was specifically developed for use in the Ka-50 Black Shark, and is also used in the Ka-52 Alligator attack helicopter. The seat is more of a tractor rocket system than a full ejection seat, but it does provide for escape from the helicopter. The system first fires explosive bolts to jettison the rotor blades then jettisons the canopies and finally tractors the crewmen out. Their parachutes automatically deploy seconds later. In the United States, some work was done on a similar concept using an AH-1 Cobra helicopter, and a crew module system was tested on an H-21. Neither was followed up on."

Re: Funny Stuff!

lol! In the future I'd say there is going to be sort of a "fusion" between helicopters and jets/planes, which might form a sort of a hybrid V/STOL aircraft - Vertical/Short Takeoff and Landing (using more potent engines than current V/STOL's which would enhance it's integral mobility, etc.).

One thing that will be a true obstacle is the cost of today's technology, current 5th generation fighters are extremely expensive comparing with designs from the 4th and even 4,5 generation planes.

One example is the (hard work) the F-35 engineers had to do make the F-35B variant, this shows the growing importance of V/STOL aircraft in today's battlefields.

Yeah, the X-32 was produced by Boeing while the X-35 was produced by Lockheed Martin.
Both were competing to achieve the contract to build the new Joint Strike Fighter.
The X-35 eventually won and became the F-35 we all know today.

One plane design I really love is the McDonnell Douglas X-36:

I love the innovative design, really sexy lol!
